Diu, Gujarat
Naida Caves, located in Diu, Gujarat, are a network of man-made caves featuring unique limestone rock formations. The landscape of the caves is distinctive in terms of its geology, history, space, microclimate, and ecology. The cave complex itself is a biological repository of many species that are local to Diu, flourishing in the particular environment of the caves, some of which are not very common in the surrounding areas.
Our strategy proposed to enhance this existing diversity by recommending new species to be planted in specific areas and improving site accessibility and visitor engagement. This involved clearing certain vegetation and invasive species such as lantana, removing debris from the caves, creating pathways, and selectively pruning certain ficuses and their roots to maintain the structural integrity of the caves.
We also recommended future strategies for optimally managing the vegetation on the site so that the landscape of the caves be managed as a 'Wild Garden'—a lightly managed environment that is low maintenance, mimics and harnesses natural systems, and promotes biodiversity.
