Near RAMSAR site Nalsarovar, Gujarat

The site located near Nalsarovar, Ahmedabad, lies in a low-lying region with highly saline soil and poor water retention capacity. To address these challenges and develop a more resilient approach for the scheme’s new extension, a comprehensive Water Management Master Plan was formulated. The pre-existing master plan faced significant drainage issues during the monsoon season, where improper road grading led to localized flooding in certain sectors. The planning process used a high-precision aerial photogrammetric mapping to generate a three-dimensional model of the 22-acre terrain. Detailed Elevation Model Maps were generated from this and were analysed in detail to understand the natural water flow patterns of the site and suggest precise sector level adjustments to minimize soil movement and site disturbance. The strategy involved the planning of micro-catchments and interconnected drainage basins, which were designed to overflowed into one another and were integrated with various recharge structures were designed to promote groundwater percolation rather than runoff.
This system not only mitigates flooding but also transforms water into an active design element that sustains a network of gardens, productive landscapes, and microhabitats.
